Tip of the day- Quinoa
Quinoa (pronounced keenwa) is a type of grain recently described as a ’superfood’ by a number of sources. It gains this reputation by the fact it has a very high protein content (18-20%) and the full spectrum of essential amino acids, making it a very complete protein offering to a meal. The fact quinoa is also a grain, means it can be broken down, absorbed and utilised by the body far quicker and easier than something like the red meat of a steak.
Simply boil it up for 15 minutes and use as an alternative for rice or pasta, and enjoy the unique ‘al dente’ texture, or add to veggy soups and stews to boost the protein content. In chinese medicine it is known to ‘nourish Blood’ which means it is very tonifying like meat and should be an essential component of any vegetarian/vegan diet.
